Sunday & holiday openings

Spain restricts commercial Sunday trading. In practice for Málaga:

  • All Sundays in July and August — most large stores open.
  • December — every Sunday and 6 December (Constitution) open.
  • Rest of the year — roughly one designated Sunday per month.
  • Corner shops, bakeries, small souvenir stores — often open regardless.
  • Restaurants, cafés, museums — unaffected; Sunday is a normal trading day.

Tax-free for non-EU visitors

If you live outside the EU you can reclaim Spanish VAT (currently 21% on most goods) on anything you take home unused. Ask for the DIVA tax-free form at the till, then validate it electronically at the DIVA kiosk at Málaga Airport before you check in — the machine reads your passport and boarding pass and stamps the form digitally. Present it at the Global Blue or Planet desk (airside) for cash or card refund.
