Option 1 · C1 train

The C1 Cercanías line connects the airport with Málaga María Zambrano and Málaga Centro-Alameda. Choose María Zambrano for the main railway station and long-distance connections. Choose Centro-Alameda for the historic centre, Soho and accommodation closer to the old town.

The airport railway station is clearly signposted. Buy a ticket before boarding and keep it until the end of the journey.

Best when:

Option 2 · Airport express bus

Connects the terminal with central Málaga. A single ticket costs around €4 at the time of writing and luggage is carried without a separate charge. The bus can be easier than the train when its stops align with your hotel. Traffic is the main uncertainty.

Option 3 · Taxi

Official taxis wait outside the terminal. The final price depends on the destination, time, day and applicable airport or luggage supplements. Use the official rank and ask for a receipt. Take a taxi when you arrive late, when your accommodation is not close to public transport, when you have heavy luggage, or when several travellers can share the fare.

Option 4 · Private transfer

Useful when you want a driver waiting, need a child seat, are travelling in a larger group, or are continuing beyond Málaga city. Not necessary for most central hotel stays.

Should you rent a car at Málaga Airport?

Not for a city-centre trip alone. Central Málaga is walkable, parking can be expensive, and a car is more burden than advantage inside the old town. A practical compromise is to spend several car-free days in Málaga and collect a rental only when leaving the city.

Taxi fares include the official airport supplement (currently around €5.50) and are metered. Ask for the printed receipt (recibo) — the driver is obliged to issue one.

Arriving late at night

The C1 train's last departure from the airport is typically around 23:30 and the first morning service around 06:44. The A Exprés bus runs a night frequency roughly every hour until the last airport departure near 02:00, then resumes around 06:30. Between those gaps, the only realistic option is a taxi from the official rank at Terminal 3 arrivals or a pre-booked private transfer waiting in the arrivals hall. Do not accept lifts from anyone approaching you inside the terminal.

Luggage, families and accessibility

• • Big cases: the C1 has luggage space at both ends of each carriage, but rush-hour crowding (Mon–Fri 07:30–09:30) makes a taxi calmer.
• • Buggies and infants: the airport bus has a low floor and a dedicated buggy bay — usually easier than the train station lifts.
• • Wheelchair users: Málaga Airport station is step-free with lifts to the platforms; Centro-Alameda and María Zambrano are also step-free. Request Renfe's free Atendo assistance at least 30 minutes before travel.
• • Child seats: Spanish taxis are not required to carry them. Book a private transfer if you need one.

Which terminal, which platform?

All commercial flights arrive at Terminal 3. Follow the yellow Trenes / Trains signs from arrivals to the covered walkway that crosses to the railway station — a five-to-seven minute walk. The A Exprés bus and taxi rank are directly outside T3 arrivals on the ground level. Terminal 2 is closed to passengers.

Getting to common areas

• Centro Histórico — Train to Centro-Alameda, then walk or short taxi.
• Soho — Centro-Alameda is generally the most convenient train stop.
• La Malagueta — Train to Centro-Alameda then walk, bus or taxi. With luggage, a taxi may be more comfortable.
• Pedregalejo & El Palo — Public transport usually requires a change in central Málaga. Taxi or transfer is easier with luggage.
• María Zambrano station — Take the C1 train directly.
