When to visit

Málaga weather by month — a local's guide to timing your trip

Málaga is the warmest big city in mainland Europe — 320 days of sun, sea temperatures swimmable for six months, and a festival calendar that turns every month into a reason to come. Here's what each one actually feels like.

The short answer

  • Best overall: September — warm sea, thinner crowds, grape harvest.
  • Best for first-timers: May — beach weather without August prices.
  • Best for culture: April (Semana Santa) or November (Jazz Festival).
  • Best for nightlife: August (Feria de Málaga, nine days of round-the-clock party).
  • Best for value: November or February — mild, quiet, cheap flights.

A note on the Terral wind

A few days each summer, a hot dry wind called the Terral blows off the inland mountains and pushes Málaga's thermometer past 40°C while the sea breeze takes the day off. Locals retreat indoors from 2–6pm and the beach gets surprisingly empty. If your forecast shows one, plan a museum or a cave (the Cueva de Nerja stays at 19°C year-round).

What about rain?

Málaga averages 300+ dry days a year. When rain comes, it's usually a short, dramatic burst between November and March — rarely the all-day drizzle northern Europeans expect. Bring an umbrella in winter, not a rain coat.
