Madrid to Málaga by train: which of the three to book.
The 500 km high-speed line takes 2 h 20 and is the best way to travel between Madrid and the Costa del Sol. Since Iryo and Ouigo entered in 2022 you have three operators to choose between — and prices as low as €18.

Prices are 2026 low-season, booked 60+ days out. Peak fares (Semana Santa, August, Puente del Pilar) rise 2–3×.
Which to actually book
Ouigo is the cheapest but strips everything out — seat selection, second bag and food all cost extra. Good for a light-luggage solo trip.
Iryo is the best mid-market option: modern trains, decent seat pitch, the Bistró class throws in a snack and drink for around €10 more.
Renfe AVE runs the most trains — useful if you want flexibility. AVE Preferente (business) gives you lounge access at Atocha, which matters on Friday nights.
Booking windows
Renfe releases tickets 60–120 days out; Iryo 90–150 days; Ouigo 180 days. Cheapest fares go in the first two weeks after release. If you book 3–4 weeks out expect €35–55; same-day expect €70–120 and often only Preferente / Ouigo Plus remaining. Book on the operators' own sites — third parties add €3–8 per ticket.
What the ride is like
Departure from Atocha is smooth; the line clears Madrid quickly and climbs through the Meseta olive country. The dramatic bit is the last 30 minutes descending the Antequera gorge into Málaga — sit on the right heading south for the mountain views. Wi-Fi is patchy on all three operators through the tunnels; download offline before.
Arriving at María Zambrano
Málaga's main station is a five-minute walk from the historic centre and directly connected to the metro (Lines 1 & 2), Cercanías (C1 for airport and Fuengirola, C2 for Álora), and the intercity bus station next door. Left-luggage lockers are €5.20/day near platform 1. Taxis queue outside the north entrance; €7–9 to any centre hotel.
