Renting a car at Málaga airport: what actually happens.
Málaga is Europe's fifth-largest car-rental market and every trick in the industry is deployed here. This is what a €12/day advertised rate actually costs, which companies queue for two hours, and how to avoid the fuel scam.

Realistic 2026 prices
For a Fiat 500 / Kia Picanto class booked 3–4 weeks ahead, all-in with Super CDW: February–April ~€22/day, May–June ~€30/day, July–August €45–65/day, September–October ~€28/day, November–January ~€18/day. SUVs and 7-seaters roughly double these.
The three traps to avoid
1. The fuel scam. Some companies (notably Goldcar and Interrent) default to "Full-to-Empty": they charge you €90+ for a tank you barely used. Always request "Full-to-Full" at the desk and photograph the fuel gauge.
2. The deposit hold. Basic insurance requires a €900–1,500 credit-card hold. Super CDW (€12–15/day) removes it. If you skip it, use a credit card, not a debit — debit deposits can be released 3–4 weeks later.
3. The scratch inspection. Walk around the car with the agent, film it on your phone, and insist every mark under 3 cm is on the diagram. This one habit saves the average return-day dispute.
Do you even need a car?
If your trip is Málaga + Nerja + Marbella and you like walking cities, use trains and buses. City parking is €22–28/day and traffic in the historic centre is a nightmare. Rent a car if — and only if — you plan to drive the interior: Ronda, Setenil, Comares, El Chorro, or the pueblos of the Axarquía.
Driving from AGP into the city
Exit the airport perimeter, follow signs for MA-20 Málaga. It is 15 min to Plaza de la Marina in normal traffic, 35 min at 08:00 on a weekday. Park at SBA Alcazaba (€22/day) or Camas (€16/day) — both under five minutes' walk from the cathedral.
