Every guidebook lists the same three pueblos blancos. This is the working editorial list: which villages reward the drive, which are ruined by coaches by 11:00, and how to get to each without a car.

The five we would drive for
Frigiliana
The Moorish barrio alto is a labyrinth of whitewashed houses, blue doors, cascading geraniums and hand-painted tile panels explaining the 1568 Morisco rebellion. Eat lunch at El Adarve or Bar Virtudes for the view. Coaches arrive at 11:00 — be there by 09:30.
Comares
The "balcony of the Axarquía", perched at 700 m with a via ferrata and Andalucía's longest zip-line running past the cliff. Almost no tourists on weekdays. Eat at Molino de los Abuelos for local kid goat.
Antequera
Not a village but a proper small town — with three Neolithic dolmens (UNESCO, 2016), a Moorish alcazaba and a Renaissance old quarter. Reach it in 25 minutes on the AVE from María Zambrano to Antequera-Santa Ana, then a €10 taxi into town.
Setenil de las Bodegas
The village that lives inside a rock. Houses are built under the overhang of a limestone gorge; the main street feels like a cave. Two hours from Málaga, worth combining with Ronda (25 min further) for a full day.
Júzcar (the Smurf village)
Painted blue in 2011 for the Smurfs film launch and never repainted after the villagers voted to keep it. Kitsch but genuinely photogenic, and the Genal valley drive to reach it is the point.
Which ones to skip
Mijas Pueblo in July–August: the donkey taxis, the mass souvenir shops, the 40°C midday heat. Go in February or don't bother. Casares is spectacular from the mirador on the road in, but the village itself is small and quiet — one hour is enough, not the four-hour tour marketing suggests.
