Finding an apartment in Málaga.
Málaga is one of Spain's tightest rental markets, but it's still very findable if you know where to look, what to expect on price, and how the Spanish rental system works. This is the independent guide — realistic rents, the portals locals actually use, and the neighbourhoods worth your time.

Search Idealista and Fotocasa first — that is where the real long-term inventory lives. For 1–3 month stays before you commit, use Airbnb with the monthly filter or Spotahome. Expect €900–1,500 for a one-bed in a walkable central area, plus first month + one month deposit at signing.
What you'll pay by neighbourhood
Ranges are for a furnished one-bedroom flat, 2026. Short-term = 1–11 month lease. Long-term = 12 months+ ("alquiler de larga temporada").
| Area | Short-term / mo | Long-term / mo | Character |
|---|---|---|---|
| Centro Histórico | €1,400–2,200 | €1,100–1,800 | Walk-everywhere old town. Small flats, some noise on tapas streets. The default for a first move. |
| Soho | €1,200–1,900 | €950–1,500 | Design-led, museum-adjacent, walkable. Better value than the old town, similar convenience. |
| La Malagueta | €1,500–2,400 | €1,200–1,900 | Beachfront living, five minutes to the old town. Older buildings, some traffic noise on Paseo Marítimo. |
| Pedregalejo / El Palo | €1,000–1,700 | €800–1,300 | Fishing-village feel, beach chiringuitos, 20-minute bus into the centre. Best value with sea. |
| Teatinos | €800–1,300 | €700–1,050 | University district, modern buildings, good value if you don't need to be central. Bus and metro to the city. |
| Huelin | €900–1,400 | €800–1,200 | Working local neighbourhood west of the centre, walkable to the port and beach. Practical, unglamorous, honest. |
Where to search
The market leader for long-term and mid-term rentals across Spain. Filter by 'alquiler', set your budget in €, and always open the map view.
Second-biggest portal — often carries listings Idealista misses, particularly from smaller agencies.
Regional coverage, stronger for Andalucía than for Madrid/Barcelona. Worth checking as a third source.
Mid-term furnished rentals (1–11 months) with online booking — priced higher than the local market but avoids in-person viewings and Spanish guarantors.
For 1–3 month stays before you commit. Enable the monthly-stay filter to see the discount; it's rarely competitive past three months.
The paperwork, briefly
- NIE: foreigner ID number. Not technically required to sign a lease, but many landlords will insist.
- Nómina or bank statements: proof of income, typically three months. Freelancers show autónomo returns; remote workers show 3–6 months of bank inflows.
- Fianza: one month's rent, held by AVRA (the regional housing agency).
- Garantía adicional: extra deposit of 1–2 months. Legal, negotiable.
- Aval bancario or guarantor: sometimes requested from foreigners with no Spanish payslip. Companies like Cobee or Avalista replace this for a fee.
Timing the search
The Málaga long-term market moves fastest in September (students, autumn arrivals) and January (new-year moves). July and August are the slowest — landlords hold flats for short-term tourist rentals. Start looking two weeks before you want to move; good flats go in 24–48 hours.
Editorial note
We don't operate a listing service or earn commission on rentals. Rent bands above are drawn from Idealista's neighbourhood-level medians, cross-checked against agency asking prices in the current quarter.
A note on freshness: opening hours, prices and transport in Málaga can change. Confirm time-sensitive information through the official source before you travel.
