Málaga on a Budget: How to Do It Properly for Under €60 a Day

The daily budget breakdown

Two people sharing a private budget room brings the accommodation cost per person down further, making a comfortable two-person trip achievable for around €70–90/day total in shoulder season.

Free things that don't feel like consolation prizes

• The Alcazaba and Gibralfaro views from outside — you don't have to pay entry to appreciate the fortress from below or walk the surrounding Parque de Málaga.
• CAC Málaga — contemporary art, free entry, genuinely good collection, easily missed by visitors chasing the Picasso Museum instead.
• Municipal museums, Sundays after 17:00 — including the Museo de Málaga, free for the last hours of the week.
• Picasso Museum, Sundays from 17:00 — free entry on the same schedule; check current hours before planning around it.
• Beach days — Málaga's city beaches (La Malagueta, Pedregalejo) need no entry fee or sunbed rental if you bring a towel.
• Walking the old town and Soho — the street art in Soho and the cathedral exterior cost nothing and are worth an unhurried hour or two.

Eating well without spending much

The menú del día is the single best budget tool in Spain — three courses, bread, and a drink (often wine) for €12–16, available at most local (non-touristy) restaurants on weekdays between roughly 13:00 and 16:00. It's aimed at working locals on lunch break, not tourists, so it's consistently good value. For dinner, a tapas crawl of 3–4 small plates shared between two people, at €3–6 a plate, comes in well under a sit-down main-course meal and lets you sample more of what a place does well. Espeto de sardinas — sardines grilled on the beach — runs €3.50–5 for six skewers and doubles as both a meal and an experience.

Where to sleep cheaply without ending up somewhere bad

Teatinos, the university district, has the cheapest accommodation in the city and is well connected by bus and Cercanías, though it's a 15–20 minute ride from the old town rather than walking distance. For budget stays closer to the centre, look at guesthouses and hostels in the streets just outside Centro Histórico proper — still walkable, noticeably cheaper than a bed right on Calle Larios. Getting around for almost nothing

The airport-to-centre Cercanías train costs €1.80 and takes 12 minutes — skip the taxi entirely (see our airport transport guide). Within the city, Centro, Soho, La Malagueta and Pedregalejo are all walkable to each other, so a multi-day trip based in one of those areas may need no paid transport at all beyond the airport transfer.

Timing your trip to save the most

Prices swing hard by season. November through February offers the lowest hotel and flight rates of the year alongside genuinely mild weather (see our best time to visit guide), while June and September offer summer warmth at noticeably below-August prices. August itself is the most expensive month to visit by a wide margin and is worth avoiding entirely on a tight budget.
