Eat & Drink · Málaga

Begin with the fire.

In Málaga, some of the best meals start with a wooden boat filled with sand, a line of sardines and an open flame. The city's food is direct, social and tied to place: espetos by the sea, fried fish in paper, porra antequerana on a hot afternoon, sweet wine poured from old barrels.

Quick answer

Order slowly. A good Málaga evening is a progression, not a single reservation — begin with two or three plates, drink Málaga wine or a cold beer, and let the meal decide its own length.

What to order first

  1. 01
    Espeto de sardinas

Sardines skewered and cooked over an open beach fire — Málaga's defining meal.

  2. 02
    Boquerones

Fresh anchovies, either lightly fried or marinated in vinegar.

  3. 03
    Fritura malagueña

A mixed platter of small fried fish, best eaten as soon as it arrives.

  4. 04
    Porra antequerana

A thicker, richer cousin of gazpacho from nearby Antequera.

  5. 05
    Ensaladilla rusa

The Spanish potato salad — a bar-quality indicator.

  6. 06
    Ajoblanco

Cold almond and garlic soup, often served with grapes.

  7. 07
    Berenjenas con miel

Fried aubergine drizzled with sugarcane honey.

  8. 08
    Tarta malagueña

    Local almond and sweet-wine cake.

  9. 09
    Vino dulce de Málaga

Sweet fortified wine, best from a barrel in an old-fashioned bodega.

Where to eat, in short

For espetos, head east — Pedregalejo and El Palo. For tapas, walk the streets between the cathedral, Calle Granada and Plaza de la Merced. For a working market experience, arrive at Atarazanas mid-morning. For sweet Málaga wine at a bar that hasn't been redecorated, ask any Malagueño over sixty.

A Málaga eating rhythm

  • Morning — pitufo (small toasted roll) with olive oil, tomato and ham, plus café con leche.
  • Midday — tapa or media ración at the bar with a caña, or a full lunch after 14:00.
  • Late afternoon — merienda: coffee and something small around 18:00.
  • Evening — dinner from 21:00, often built across two or three places.
